Black September terrorist operatives attacked the Israeli delegation to the Munich Olympics. Two athletes were murdered inside the Olympic Village and the other nine were murdered during a failed rescue attempt by the German police.

Prime Minister Golda Meir sent the head of the Mossad to Germany to help the Germans negotiate with the terrorists. The Germans refused Israel's offer to send a Sayeret Matkal unit for assistance. 

The event shocked the world and caused Israel to launch a series of retaliatory operations against those responsible for the massacre.
