After an attempt to assassinate King Hussein, the Jordanian army attacked the Palestinian terrorist organizations based in Jordan. During the fighting, Syrian army forces invaded Jordan but withdrew following American-British pressure and an Israeli threat. Thousands of terrorists were killed and the Palestinians were forced to move their activities from Jordan to Lebanon. The events resulted in the establishment of the organization calling itself Black September.
