A technical failure in a bomb detonator caused ammunition to explode near a Phantom jet on a mission to strike terrorist targets in the Sidon area of Lebanon. Two crew members ejected from their plane. Yishai Aviram, the pilot, was rescued by helicopter. Ron Arad, the navigator, was captured by the Shi'ite Amal organization and most likely transferred to Hezbollah or Iran. A complex process of diplomatic and operational efforts began to locate every bit of information and sign of life, and to understand who was responsible for his fate and where he was last seen alive. To this day the efforts have not borne fruit, and his fate is unknown.
