The assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin

At the end of a peace rally held in the Kings of Israel Square (later renamed Rabin Square), assassin Yigal Amir breached the security perimeter and shot three bullets into Prime Minister Rabin's back, killing him. The Shamgar Commission's investigation revealed a string of Shabak and police failures – the two organizations responsible for security. The head of the Shabak resigned and stricter regulations were put in place regarding the security of public figures. The assassination shocked the entire country and its impact is felt to this day.
