The Sayeret Matkal was inspired by the Palmach's undercover unit. Its main purpose was to gather intelligence and carry out operational activity behind the enemy lines and deep within the home front. It was originally part of Unit 154 and in August 1958 it was declared an independent unit and today is operated by Military Intelligence Special Operations. Its capabilities and operations are considered top secret and have never been made public. Its motto is "Who dares wins."
