The objective of Operation "Diamond" was to recruit an Iraqi pilot for defection to Israel, together with a MiG-21 aircraft. After two years of complex covert activity, he landed in northern Israel on August 16, 1966.
The information from the examination of the aircraft contributed greatly to the Israeli Air Force's understanding of the Mig 21's capabilities and limitations, information which was given to Israel's allies. The success of the operation significantly strengthened the Mossad's status in the international arena.
